About Dr. Mario Maruthur

Dr. Maruthur is a fellowship-trained and Board-Certified Mohs Micrographic surgeon and Board-Certified Dermatologist that focuses exclusively on skin cancer treatment.

While his father was born in Kerala, India, and his mother was from Chicago, IL, he was born and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where his father practiced medicine as an endocrinologist specializing in diabetes. After graduating as the valedictorian of his high school class, he attended Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After college, he decided to become an entrepreneur. He started a successful freight transportation and logistics company, which he ran for eight years specializing in over-dimensional and expedited freight shipping. Realizing that his true calling was in serving others, he changed paths and went back to school to pursue a career in medicine.

He attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he graduated at the top of his class with a 4.0 GPA. After medical school, he completed a dermatology residency at Emory University in Atlanta. Following residency, he moved to Augusta, GA. He began to practice general dermatology as a faculty member of the Department of Dermatology at the Medical College of Georgia (now known as Augusta University). Desiring to focus exclusively on skin cancer treatment, he applied to and was accepted into a Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship at the very prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York (Ranked #2 cancer hospital in the United States). Under the instruction of renowned skin cancer surgeons Dr. Kishwer Nehal, Erica Lee, Kira Minkis, and Anthony Rossi, he learned the Mohs micrographic surgical technique for skin cancer excision and plastic surgery reconstruction of complex skin cancer defects.

Dr. Maruthur lives in Vestavia Hills, AL, with his wife Dr. Kristina Falkenstrom, an intensive care (ICU) physician, and their Husky/Shepherd puppy Luka. In his downtime, he likes to cook, play tennis and golf, manage software development projects, and explore the beautiful Alabama outdoors.
